THE EPIC OF "CATHY"

Every man has his nemesis, his evil twin, his ever-present monkey on his back; that which almost cannot be named, but which exists nonetheless. For most it is a person, some unknown entity hounding them at every turn. For Bovine Ignition Systems, it was "Cathy".

"Cathy" was written entirely by Jeremy. it was obviously a special song to him, one he was trying to use to express his feelings and emotion and whatnot. It had everything a song like this should have: powerful opening chords, intense lyrics, heartbreaking guitar. But something... just wasn't working.

We immediately knew this was no song for Jason; actually, Jeremy knew it wasn't for Jason and it took a while for Jason to get the hint. "Let me take a shot at Cathy," Jason would say, not realizing his words were like saying "So, tell me your deepest secrets so I can tell your parents." Jeremy hemmed and hawed and eventually the possibility was dropped.

Instead, Jeremy tried singing it. He tried having others sing it: a girl named Britt, a boy named Daniel, even as an instrumental. It travelled with the band's improved equipment across the years, from the Casio to the Korg to the end of the earth. Even as the leaves turned and fell, and as spring arrived again, "Cathy" remained elusive.

We both moved on, trying to forget the debacle of "Cathy" and the unfulfilled dreams it represented. Jason's current theory is that now, years later, Jeremy will one day find the girl or the guy who can sing "Cathy" and have it work... and then he will marry them. It only makes sense.

Until then, all we have are the half-forgotten attempts at capturing "Cathy" on tape to tell us what could have been.
